A GUIDE TO CRITICAL ILLNESS INSURANCE 9 The product features described below are common to most critical illness policies sold in Canada. Remember to contact your insurance agent, insurance company or group benefits administrator, and consult your policy for specifics to your coverage. It is important to keep in mind that critical illness policies can differ from insurance company to insurance company. This includes the types of conditions covered, and the definitions of those illnesses. For instance, critical illness policies will often include coverage for certain types of cancers, heart attack, stroke, or multiple sclerosis. The definition as it reads in your policy is the one that will apply to your claim. Covered conditions The critical illness insurance contract you agree to will provide a list of illnesses that are covered, what exclusions exist, and how the diagnosis of a condition must be made. Each condition will be carefully defined in the contract. The number of illnesses covered by each insurer can vary. Critical illness insurance is meant to cover only the most serious of medical conditions, and there may be requirements based on severity. Conditions that aren't specifically defined in your policy will not be insured and no benefit would be payable for these. Generally, diagnosis must be made by a licensed physician who is a specialist in the covered condition. WHAT ILLNESSES DOES CRITICAL ILLNESS INSURANCE COVER? 3 Aortic surgery Aplastic anemia Bacterial meningitis Benign brain tumour Blindness Cancer Coma Coronary angioplasty Coronary artery bypass surgery Deafness Dementia including Alzheimer's disease Heart attack Heart valve replacement or repair Kidney failure Loss of independent existence Loss of limbs Loss of speech Major organ failure on a waiting list Major organ transplant Motor neuron disease Multiple sclerosis Occupational HIV infection Paralysis Parkinson's disease and specified atypical Parkinsonian disorders Severe burns Stroke Conditions typically covered under critical illness insurance (defined by CLHIA's 2018 Critical Illness Benchmark Definitions)
