Through their foreign branch and subsidiary operations, Canadian life and health insurance providers actively conduct business in more than 20 countries and territories around the world, providing financial protection to about 45 million people through life and health insurance policies and annuity contracts. Three Canadian life and health insurers rank in the top 15 of the world's largest life insurance companies. Premiums During 2013, Canadian life and health insurance providers received over $56.3 billion in premiums and premium equivalents from outside Canada, up 16 per cent over the 2012 levels and accounting for 41 per cent of their worldwide total. Canadian companies collect considerably more premiums abroad than foreign companies do in Canada. For instance, during 2013, foreign companies operating in Canada through branches and subsidiaries, collected premiums of $17.7 billion from Canadian clients, compared with the $56.3 billion generated by Canadian companies from foreign customers. Of total foreign premiums, 56 per cent comes from the United States, Foreign Operations of Canadian Insurers ❖ In 2013, foreign branch and subsidiary operations of Canadian life and health insurers accounted for: ◆ premiums of $56.3 billion, or 41 per cent of their worldwide total; ◆ benefit payments of $60.8 billion; and ◆ assets of $657.6 billion, or 51 per cent of their global total.
