The industry's investments often support longer-term capital investments, including infrastructure investments, which are critical to creating economic growth. The industry is one of the largest investors in a variety of key asset classes. In 2014, life and health insurers held approximately $17.8 billion in investments for the long- term – roughly 97 per cent of their total invested assets in Saskatchewan. The investments of life and health insurance providers in federal, provincial and municipal bonds help governments provide essential services such as schools, roads and sanitation systems. Investments in corporate securities (bonds and stocks) help finance new business ventures, and assist established companies to expand, thereby, creating more jobs. Insurance investments in mortgages and real estate help people finance their homes and build needed apartment and office buildings, stores and shopping centres, warehouses and factories. Literally thousands of buildings have been financed throughout Saskatchewan.
