5 President's Message solving issues. We are also finding ourselves increasingly in the public eye which, while beneficial in many ways, also comes with its own challenges. Despite this, I am pleased to say that we are continuing to make inroads in a number of key areas. Continuing to demonstrate industry leadership in public policy As we move forward with our efforts to promote policies that improve the lives of Canadians, this year we focused on a number of key areas. In particular, we took the initiative to re-examine two areas where we believe consumers are looking to the industry to re-examine its practices in the current marketplace to ensure that the industry's customers are still being treated fairly. The first was the development of an industry policy paper on distribution issues, Insurance Distribution in Canada: promoting a customer- focused system. The result was ten In many ways, the past year was a transformational one for the CLHIA. As an organization, we have taken new approaches in a number of areas in order to promote meaningful change and reflect a dynamic approach to recommendations, including the elimination of incentive travel for independent agents, and an open industry-leading disclosure system for segregated funds. A second area that we tackled was travel insurance, which has presented challenges for the industry and consumers alike. We, with our members, are working with regulators to provide greater clarity of the information that consumers will receive when applying for travel insurance, and to deal with some of the issues that have arisen in the sale of this important product for Canadians. Another substantial public policy issue that we have been dealing with is seeking to lower the cost of prescription drugs for all Canadians. The CLHIA continues to play a leadership role on this file in order to bring about significant change on how drugs are purchased in Canada.
