2 Chair's Message daily basis. Our industry is on the radar screens of policymakers, regulators, the media and Canadians in general, more so than in past years. Under the microscope The CLHIA has been working for the past six years on raising the industry's profile with policymakers, regulators and key influencers, particularly with respect to the important role we play in public-policy matters such as healthcare and infrastructure. This has, in turn, led to expanding coverage in the news media. As a result, we are increasingly finding ourselves under the microscope in the court of public opinion. Perhaps this is because of the nature of our industry, that is, our position at the intersection of a business interest supporting Canada's economy while also having a significant role in matters related to social policy. You only have to look at the wide range of issues we have been dealing It seems this past year has sped by more quickly than previous ones. Perhaps I have that impression because of the speed at which a growing list of issues is coming at us on an almost with over the past few months to see how this dual role is playing out in the public domain, for example: • Insurers' access to genetic testing results • Pensions and retirement savings • Coverage of medical marijuana • Physician-assisted suicide and its potential impact on life insurance • Exclusions for attempted-suicide and self-inflicted injury • Travel insurance and consumers' understanding of what is covered. Governments, our policyholders and Canadian consumers are looking to us to be part of the solution as well as to adapt to the changing social fabric. This includes finding ways to make sure that we're being fair to our customers.
