The CLHIA met its stated goals or made significant progress in all the areas it had set out as key objectives in its Strategic Plan for the 2016-2017 fiscal year. In addition, we maintained forward momentum in many of our ongoing initiatives, areas that were more general and longer term in nature. The following is an account of many of these achievements and developments. KEY OBJECTIVES Pensions and Retirement Savings Policy c The proposed Ontario Registered Pension Plan (ORPP) would have resulted in substantive declines in private pension plans and group RRSPs to the significant detriment of Canadian workers and the industry. Led by the CLHIA, and with the strong support of our member companies, a coalition of 15 businesses and other groups was formed that placed advertisements across the country to encourage governments to adopt a CPP solution that would be significantly less harmful than the ORPP. We believe this coalition activity played a major role in convincing governments that a modest CPP enhancement would be acceptable to the broad business community. While the CPP enhancements are not as targeted as we would like, Ontario's withdrawal of the ORPP and implementation of Pooled Registered Pension Plans (PRPPs) in November provide further opportunities for more Canadian workers to benefit from workplace savings regimes. c The CLHIA continues to encourage the remaining governments (New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador) to introduce (and, in the case of Alberta and Manitoba, to implement) PRPP legislation. The CLHIA and other business groups encouraged governments to adopt a CPP solution that would be significantly less harmful than the ORPP Review of the Year's Results Distribution Issues c The CLHIA made solid progress on implementing the ten recommendations on distribution practices arising from the Phase 1 of the report, Insurance Distribution in Canada: Promoting a customer-focused system, produced by the Distribution Task Force in early 2016.
