17 Over the past decade, total general fund assets grew at an average annual rate of 5.9% to $495 billion, compared to segregated fund assets which grew at an average annual rate of 7.6% to $318 billion. The popularity of segregated funds has increased relative to general funds, rising from 35% of total assets in 2006 to 39% in 2016. The mix of investments within general and segregated funds (bonds, stocks, mutual funds, etc.) reflects the nature of the associated insurance contracts.
