A GUIDE TO CRITICAL ILLNESS INSURANCE 25 We hope this guide has given you a better sense of what critical illness insurance is, what it covers and the different types of policies and options that insurers offer. We also hope it's given you a few questions to ask your insurer or agent to help you choose a critical illness policy that is right for you. But once you are done with this guide, there's still lots of other places where you can find help with critical illness insurance. How do I buy a policy? Once you decide to buy critical illness coverage, you'll want to start looking into the kinds of policies that are out there, their features, exclusions and benefits – all the things we've described in this guide. You can find a lot of information about critical illness policies right on insurers' websites. This is a good place to start. Just be sure you are looking at companies that are authorized to sell insurance in Canada. An insurance agent can also help. They can talk to you about your needs and help you compare different policies offered by a particular insurer. Some may be able to compare policies across several insurance companies for you. But first, check to see if you have access to critical illness insurance coverage through a group plan. Your employer, union or other association that you belong to may have coverage that you can buy into. What if I have a question about my policy? Once you have a policy in place, you can make changes by contacting your insurance agent or your insurer directly. Check your insurer's website to find the contact information for their customer service centre. If you need to make a claim, your agent or the insurance company will be able to help you to start the claim process (see section 9). 10 WHERE TO GO FOR ASSISTANCE
