A GUIDE TO CRITICAL ILLNESS INSURANCE
12
Examples of covered conditions that may be subject to an exclusion period are:
• cancer
• benign brain tumour
• multiple sclerosis
• Parkinson's disease and specified atypical Parkinsonian disorders
Here's an example of how an exclusion period works:
In this example, the 90-day
cancer exclusion applies,
and the claim would not be
payable. That's because there
were signs and symptoms
within the first 90-days
of the policy that led to
further testing and a cancer
diagnosis. Also, any future
cancer conditions might be
excluded from the policy.
For further information about
the exclusion period in your
contract, please speak to your
agent or insurer.

You've purchased a critical
illness policy with a 90-day
cancer exclusion, and your
coverage is now in place.
You experience some concerning
symptoms – abdominal discomfort
and fatigue and you book an
appointment with your doctor.
During the appointment, your
doctor requests you have a
colonoscopy.
The colonoscopy finds abnormal
tissue in your colon. A sample is
removed during the procedure and
sent to a laboratory for analysis.
Test results are received and
are diagnostic of cancer.
You submit a critical illness
claim against your policy.
